Biography

Rob Edwards, born on June 22, 1963, is a renowned American television and feature film screenwriter and producer. His impressive body of work includes Disney animated feature films such as Treasure Planet and The Princess and the Frog, both of which received Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature.

Edwards' writing career began after graduating from the Cranbrook Schools in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and attending Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts in the Transmedia Department. He then moved to Los Angeles and gained success as a television writer, working on long-running shows like Full House, A Different World, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Edwards' accolades include an Emmy Award nomination for the sketch comedy show In Living Color and a Best Screenplay award from the African-American Film Critics Association for The Princess and the Frog, which he shared with Ron Clements and John Musker in 2009.

As a television writer, Edwards created the NBC sitcom Out All Night, starring Patti LaBelle, Morris Chestnut, and Vivica A. Fox. Throughout the 1990s, he wrote and produced for television networks and series, including Roc, The Parent 'Hood, and In the House.

Edwards' transition to feature films began when he joined Walt Disney Animation Studios as a writer. His debut film, Treasure Planet, was released in 2002 and received critical acclaim, earning eight Annie Award nominations and an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.

Edwards' next project, The Princess and the Frog, was a critical and commercial success, earning three Oscar nominations, including the Best Animated Feature Oscar. He collaborated with the Disney Animation team of Ron Clements and John Musker on both films.

In recent years, Edwards has been working on various projects, including collaborations with producers Robert Zemeckis, Bob Cooper, and Jack Rapke, as well as with Will Smith, Dan Fogelman, and Reggie Hudlin. In October 2021, it was announced that Edwards would write the script and make his directorial debut on the animated film Sneaks.
