Rafael Yglesias is an American novelist and screenwriter born on May 12, 1954, in the iconic city of New York. His parents, Jose and Helen Yglesias, were also renowned novelists. Interestingly, his older son, Matthew, is a prominent blogger and journalist, while his younger son, Nicholas, is a novelist who has applied to become a police cadet.
Growing up in Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood, Yglesias developed a strong sense of community. He currently resides in the charming Greenwich Village. The talented writer attended the prestigious Horace Mann School and the George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill, Maine. However, he dropped out of 10th grade just three months in to focus on completing his debut novel, Hide Fox, and All After. The novel was published by Doubleday in 1972.
Yglesias's writing career also flourished in the realm of screenplays. His first produced screenplay was an adaptation of his novel Fearless. He has since adapted works by notable authors such as Ariel Dorfman, Victor Hugo, and Alan Moore. His most recent film, Dark Water, is a remake of a Japanese horror film of the same name.
On a more personal note, Yglesias's ninth and latest novel, A Happy Marriage, is a poignant and fictionalized account of his nearly thirty-year marriage to the talented artist Margaret Joskow, who sadly passed away from cancer in 2004.
