Phillip Alford, born on September 11, 1948, is an American actor who has made a lasting impression in the entertainment industry, particularly with his iconic role as Jeremy "Jem" Finch in the 1962 film adaptation of Harper Lee's novel, To Kill a Mockingbird.
Born in Gadsden, Alabama, Alford's early life was marked by his passion for the performing arts. He was approached by the director of Birmingham's Town and Gown Civic Theatre, who had noticed his talent and wanted him to audition for the role of Jem in To Kill a Mockingbird. Initially hesitant, Alford eventually agreed to audition, provided he would only miss half a day of school. His dedication and perseverance paid off, as he was selected as one of the three finalists and later won the role of Jem Finch.
During the filming of To Kill a Mockingbird, Alford's family, including his parents and sister, Eugenia, traveled to Hollywood to be with him. Eugenia, in fact, served as the stand-in actress for Mary Badham, who played Jem's sister, Scout, in the film. Unfortunately, the two actors did not always see eye-to-eye, and their disagreements often led to tension on set. At one point, Alford even planned a prank against Badham, a testament to the strong emotions and rivalries that can arise during the creative process.
After his successful stint in To Kill a Mockingbird, Alford continued to pursue his acting career, appearing in a range of films and television shows. His notable credits include Fair Play (1972),The Intruders (1970),Shenandoah (1965),and Bristle Face (1964).
Today, Alford is a successful businessman in Birmingham, Alabama, where he has established a reputation for his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to his community. Despite his many accomplishments, Alford remains humble and grounded, a testament to the enduring legacy of his iconic role in To Kill a Mockingbird.
