Philipp Yuryev is a Russian filmmaker born on January 15, 1990. He graduated from the directing department of the prestigious Russian State University of Cinematography, VGIK, in 2011.
Yuryev's early work includes his first student film, "The Morning with Different Eyes," which premiered in 2008 and went on to win several awards at international film festivals, such as the São Paolo International Film Festival and the Abu Dhabi International Film Festival. His next short film, "The Modified Landscape," was showcased at the CineGlobe International Film Festival in Geneva and received special mentions at the Saint Anna Student Film Festival in Moscow.
Yuryev's thesis film, "The Song of the Mechanical Fish," was selected for the short film competition program at both the Sundance Film Festival and the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival. The film received the Special Jury Prize at the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival and the Message To Man International Film Festival in St. Petersburg.
After gaining recognition for his short films, Yuryev made his feature directorial debut with "The Whaler Boy" in 2020. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and went on to win the top prize in the "Venice Days" program.
