Biography

Nass El Ghiwane, a Moroccan musical group, was formed in the 1970s in Casablanca's Hay Mohammadi district. The original members were Laarbi Batma, Allal Yaâla, Moulay Abdelaziz Tahiri, Omar Sayed, Raifak Redouane, Mohamed Akhdim, and Boujmîa Hagour.

The group's music is a fusion of traditional Moroccan styles, such as Aïta, Melhoun, Gnaoua, Hamadcha, and Jilala, with modern themes and lyrics. Their songs often address the struggles and concerns of Moroccan youth and society, and are characterized by their poetic and committed lyrics.

Nass El Ghiwane's music has had a significant impact on Moroccan and Maghreb culture, and they have been credited with revolutionizing Moroccan music. The group's influence can be seen in the work of other artists, such as Peter Gabriel, who has been inspired by their music.

Despite facing censorship and bans, Nass El Ghiwane continued to produce music and inspire new generations of musicians. In 2007, the group was "rehabilitated" by King Mohamed VI, and they were decorated as knights of arts and letters in Fez.

Today, Nass El Ghiwane remains an important part of Moroccan cultural heritage, and their music continues to inspire and influence new artists.
