Biography

Miryam Charles, a multifaceted creative force, resides in Montreal. As a director, producer, and cinematographer, she has cultivated a diverse portfolio of short and feature-length fiction films.

Her artistic journey began with the art-house short film Vole vole Tristesse, released in 2015. This poignant exploration of social struggles earned Charles widespread recognition, including the Prix de la meilleure œuvre d'art et expérimentation des Rendez-vous Québec Cinéma. This inaugural success introduced Charles as a talented filmmaker, and she continued to push boundaries with a series of experimental shorts.

These shorts, including Towards The Colonies (2016),Une forteresse (2018),Drei Atlas (2018),and Second Generation (2019),delved deeper into the same themes of social struggles, further solidifying Charles' reputation as a thought-provoking storyteller.

Charles' breakthrough year was 2022, marked by the release of her well-received first feature-length documentary, Cette maison. This ambitious project blurred the lines between experimentation and fiction, tackling the crucial topic of security and violence in habitable spaces. The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and went on to win the Silvestre award for Best Feature Film at the IndieLisboa International Film Festival.

In addition to her documentary, Charles also released the short fiction film Au crépuscule in 2022. This powerful exploration of eating disorders was selected for the official competition at the prestigious Locarno International Film Festival.
