Miley Ray Cyrus, born Destiny Hope Cyrus on November 23, 1992, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress who has earned the nickname "Pop Chameleon" for her remarkable musical versatility and constant artistic reinventions. She is often referred to as the "Teen Queen" of the 2000s pop culture and is one of the few child stars who successfully transitioned into an adult career.
Born into a family of six siblings, Cyrus is the second daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus. She gained fame as a teenager playing the titular character in the Disney Channel television series Hannah Montana from 2006 to 2011. As Hannah Montana, she achieved two number-one and three top-five soundtracks on the Billboard 200, and the single "He Could Be the One" reached the top ten on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
Cyrus's early solo career consisted of pop rock albums Meet Miley Cyrus and Breakout, which both reached number one on the U.S. charts and included top-ten singles "See You Again" and "7 Things". Her extended play The Time of Our Lives peaked at number two in the U.S. and its lead single "Party in the U.S.A." became one of the best-selling singles in the United States, certified diamond by the RIAA. Cyrus also released the country pop ballad "The Climb", which reached number four.
In 2010, Cyrus released the country pop album Can't Be Tamed, which received mixed reviews but its title track reached the top ten in the U.S. After a hiatus, she underwent a significant musical shift with the R&B and hip hop-infused album Bangerz in 2013, featuring the top-five single "We Can't Stop" and her first U.S. number-one single "Wrecking Ball", earning her first Grammy Award nomination.
Cyrus continued to experiment with different genres, releasing the free album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz in 2015, embracing country pop on Younger Now in 2017, which included the top-ten single "Malibu", and incorporating trap on the EP She Is Coming in 2019. She explored rock on Plastic Hearts in 2020, which topped the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart, and released her next album Endless Summer Vacation in 2023, preceded by the single "Flowers", which set several streaming records and became her second U.S. number-one single.
Outside of her music, Cyrus has appeared in several films, including Bolt, Hannah Montana: The Movie, The Last Song, LOL, and So Undercover, and has made television appearances on shows such as The Voice and Black Mirror. She has also hosted the NBC holiday special Miley's New Year's Eve Party since 2021 and starred in and executive produced the Disney+ documentary concert special Endless Summer Vacation (Backyard Sessions) in 2023.
In 2014, Cyrus founded the non-profit organization Happy Hippie Foundation, which was supported by the web video series Backyard Sessions from 2012 to 2023.
