Montez's artistic persona was inspired by the iconic actress Maria Montez, a revered figure in the gay community during the 1950s and 1960s.
Prior to his association with Warhol, Montez had already gained recognition for his roles in Jack Smith's groundbreaking underground films, including Flaming Creatures and Normal Love. In 1964, he also starred in Ron Rice's avant-garde film, Chumlum.
