Kenney began his radio career at the tender age of 15 in 1963 as a disc jockey at WIRL in Peoria, Illinois. He then went on to work at various radio stations across the United States, including WOWO in Fort Wayne, Indiana; WKYC (AM, now WTAM) in Cleveland, Ohio; WHN, WYNY, and WKHK (now WLTW) in New York City; and WJJD (now WYLL) in Chicago, Illinois, until 1972.
