Biography

Takehiko Shima, born Takehiko Kagoshima, began his journey in Tokyo after completing his high school education, leaving behind his native Nagasaki. He was part of the inaugural class of the prestigious Nihon Eiga Haiyū Gakkō and joined the esteemed Nikkatsu studio as an actor in 1925. With a natural flair for romantic leads, he appeared in numerous films directed by acclaimed masters such as Tomu Uchida and Kenji Mizoguchi, solidifying his reputation as a talented thespian.

As his passion for filmmaking grew, Shima transitioned to directing in 1939, quickly establishing himself as a prominent figure in the industry with notable films like Kaze no Matasaburō, an adaptation of a Kenji Miyazawa story, and Jirō Monogatari. Following the war, he continued to flourish, directing films such as Ginza Kankan Musume and Jūdai no Seiten at Shintoho and Daiei Studios.

Shima's illustrious career earned him a prize at the 1st Moscow International Film Festival for his film Unforgettable Trail. His remarkable body of work includes over 90 films as a director and over 90 films as an actor. His personal life was marked by a marriage to the talented actress Yukiko Todoroki. Later in his career, Shima ventured into filmmaking in Hong Kong, collaborating with Shaw Brothers on several projects.

Throughout his life, Shima's dedication to his craft and passion for storytelling left an indelible mark on the world of cinema.
