He is the son of Yvonne, a state employee, and Robert Hooks, a renowned director and actor who appeared in numerous films during the 1970s. Kevin's friends affectionately refer to him as "King Royal".

He is perhaps best known for his roles in Aaron Loves Angela and Sounder, as well as his portrayal of Morris Thorpe in the popular television series The White Shadow.
