Biography

Kembrew McLeod, a multifaceted individual, is an American journalist, artist, activist, and professor of Communication Studies at the University of Iowa, where he imparts his knowledge and expertise to the next generation of scholars and thinkers.

As a renowned performance artist, also known as a "media prankster," McLeod gained widespread recognition for his bold and unconventional approach to art and activism. In 1997, he took a provocative step by filing an application to register the phrase "Freedom of Expression" as a trademark in the United States, a move that sparked intense debate and discussion about the limits of free speech.

The phrase "Freedom of Expression" was the title of his zine/artist book series, which explored themes of creativity, self-expression, and social commentary. On January 6, 1998, McLeod's efforts were rewarded when he was granted registration no. 2127381 in Class 16, covering "booklets in the field of creative writing."

Throughout his academic and professional career, McLeod has received numerous accolades and degrees, including a PhD from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, an MA from the University of Virginia, and a BS from James Madison University.
