John Michael Green, an American author, YouTube content creator, podcaster, and philanthropist, was born on August 24, 1977. He has written numerous bestselling novels, including The Fault in Our Stars, which has sold over 50 million copies worldwide.
Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Green was raised in Orlando, Florida, before attending boarding school outside of Birmingham, Alabama. He then went on to attend Kenyon College, graduating with a double major in English and religious studies in 2000.
After graduating, Green spent six months as a student chaplain at a children's hospital, before reconsidering his path and beginning his career as a writer. His debut novel, Looking for Alaska, was published in 2005 and won the 2006 Michael L. Printz Award.
Green's subsequent novels, including An Abundance of Katherines and Paper Towns, were also well-received by critics and readers. In 2007, he launched the Vlogbrothers YouTube channel with his brother Hank, which spawned an active online community and an annual telethon-style fundraiser called Project for Awesome.
In the following years, Green published several more novels, including Let It Snow, Will Grayson, Will Grayson, and The Fault in Our Stars. The latter became a massive success, debuting at number one on The New York Times Best Seller list and remaining in the top ten for over two years.
Green's work has also been adapted into several films and television shows, including the 2014 film adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars. He has also been recognized for his philanthropic work, including being included in Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2014.
In recent years, Green has been open about his struggles with anxiety and obsessive–compulsive disorder, and has used his platform to raise awareness and funds for mental health initiatives. He has also collaborated with his wife, art curator Sarah Urist Green, on several projects, including the video series The Art Assignment and Ours Poetica.
Green has been a prominent supporter of Partners In Health, a non-profit organization that aims to reduce maternal mortality in Sierra Leone. He has also been a trustee for the organization and has helped to raise funds and awareness for their mission.
