Joseph Matthew Alwyn, born on February 21st, 1991, is a talented English actor who has made a significant impact in the film industry. His feature film debut was in Ang Lee's 2016 war drama, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, and since then, he has appeared in a variety of films, including The Favourite, Boy Erased, Mary Queen of Scots, and Harriet.
Alwyn's journey in acting began during his teenage years, when he developed an interest in the craft. He joined the National Youth Theatre in 2009 and acted in two student productions at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He then pursued higher education, graduating with a BA degree in English literature and drama from the University of Bristol in 2012. Alwyn further honed his acting skills by earning another BA degree in acting from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in 2015.
In addition to his acting accomplishments, Alwyn has also made a name for himself in the music industry. He has collaborated with American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift on ten of her songs, co-writing tracks such as "Exile", "Betty", "Champagne Problems", and "Coney Island" from her 2020 albums, Folklore and Evermore. "Exile" charted inside the top 10 in eight countries, and Alwyn won the Album of the Year at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards for his contributions to Folklore.
In recent years, Alwyn has continued to expand his repertoire, appearing in a lead role in the Hulu series Conversations with Friends, starring in the romantic thriller film Stars at Noon, which won the Grand Prix at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, and featuring on the Time 100 Next list.
