Biography

Elsa Chauvel, a renowned actress and filmmaker, was born on February 10, 1898, in Collingwood, Melbourne, as Elsie May Wilcox, to Edward Wilcox, a tinsmith, and his wife Ada Marie, née Worrall.

As a child, the family traveled to South Africa, where Wilcox formed a theatrical troupe, and Elsie, along with her elder brother, joined the company, adopting stage names Sylvaney and Kyrle McAlister. They later performed in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Basutoland before returning to Australia in 1924.

Elsie was petite and pretty, with dark hair, fair skin, and blue eyes. She met film director Charles Edward Chauvel while performing in the musical "Crackers" in Brisbane, and he cast her as the lead in his second feature film, "Greenhide," in 1926.

Elsie married Charles on June 5, 1927, and they sailed for the United States in 1928 to further Charles's career in Hollywood. Elsa returned to the stage in San Francisco and Los Angeles, performing in "Mid-Channel." After their return to Australia, she appeared in Brisbane, Stanthorpe, and Sydney, often giving elocution and dancing lessons to supplement their income.

The couple had a daughter in 1930, and they moved to Sydney, living in various suburbs, including Vaucluse, Pymble, and Castlecrag. Elsa wrote in a 1934 magazine article that women's roles were to charm men, love, and serve them, which she embodied in her professional and personal partnership with Charles.

Together, they made seven feature films, traveling to Pitcairn Island and Tahiti for "In the Wake of the Bounty" (1933) and inland Australia for "Jedda" (1955). During World War II, they produced documentaries, and in 1956-57, they traveled through the outback filming the television series "Walkabout" for the British Broadcasting Corporation.

After Charles's death in 1959, Elsa continued to promote Australian film, collecting prints of Chauvel films for preservation in the national film archive. She was appointed OBE in 1964 and served on the board of the Royal New South Wales Institution for Deaf & Blind Children, working for Dr. Barnardo's in Australia.

Elsa wrote her memoirs, "My Life with Charles Chauvel," in 1973 and moved to Toowoomba, Queensland, in 1977, where she died on August 22, 1983, at the age of 85.
