David Sutcliffe is a Canadian actor born on June 8, 1969, who gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Christopher Hayden, the on-again, off-again boyfriend of Lorelai Gilmore and father of Rory Gilmore, on the popular CW show Gilmore Girls.
Before venturing into the entertainment industry, Sutcliffe attended Victoria College at the University of Toronto, where he earned a degree in English literature in 1990. During his college days, he was an accomplished basketball player, but a career-ending knee injury forced him to pivot to other pursuits. To make ends meet, he worked as a waiter at a local diner called Michael's on Bay.
Sutcliffe's early career in the entertainment industry saw him starring in the independent film Two or Three Words, directed by Toronto-based filmmaker Evan Georgiades. He later appeared in the straight-to-DVD film Cake alongside Heather Graham, Taye Diggs, Sandra Oh, and Sarah Chalke. His other notable film credits include Testosterone, opposite Antonio Sabato Jr. and Sônia Braga, and Under the Tuscan Sun, where he played the role of Ed, a writer who falls in love with Frances in the film's final scenes.
In addition to his work in film, Sutcliffe has made numerous television appearances, including roles in I'm with Her, Friends, Will and Grace, Accidentally on Purpose, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and Cold Feet. He also had a recurring role on Private Practice, playing a police officer smitten with the lead character Dr. Addison Montgomery, and appeared in 13 episodes across the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 seasons.
Sutcliffe's other notable projects include the 2009 film Before You Say I Do, where he starred alongside Amanda Schull, and his appearances on the World Poker Tour, participating in the Hollywood Home games to benefit the Hollygrove House charity. He was previously married to actress Julie McCullough.
