Christine McBurney

Personal Details

Biography

Christine was born in Brooklyn, New York, and spent her formative years in northeast Ohio, where she developed a strong sense of community and a love for the performing arts. She would often entertain her neighbors on the stoop, singing and dancing for an audience of women who would lean out of windows to watch.

Little did she know, Christine had a rich cultural heritage waiting to be discovered. In 2017, she uncovered her lower east side Italian roots and the numerous relatives that come with them. This newfound knowledge added a new layer of depth to her understanding of herself and her place in the world.

After spending two decades in Cleveland, where she built a successful career in theatre, teaching, and raising her son, Christine finally returned to her hometown of New York City in 2021. It was a triumphant homecoming, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her life.

Christine's educational background is impressive, to say the least. She studied comparative literature and writing at Columbia University's School of General Studies, all while working at ABC Radio Network News. After a solo backpacking adventure across Europe, she mustered the courage to pursue her dream of studying acting. She received her MFA from Kent State University, and has since become a published author and a U.S. Presidential Scholar Teacher.

Christine's teaching career has been marked by numerous grants and awards, including a National Endowment for the Humanities grant, which allowed her to study Shakespeare at The Globe Theatre in London, The Juilliard School, and The National Institute on Teaching Shakespeare. She has also taught at The Film and Media Arts School at Cleveland State University and Baldwin Wallace University Department of Theatre & Dance.

As an award-winning theatre director and former artistic director, Christine has had the privilege of working with some of the best in the business. She is an alum of Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab, Directors Lab West, Directors Lab North, and Cleveland Play House Directors Gym. She has continued her acting training with Shakespeare & Company, Dream Lab Studio, James Ciccone, and Anthony Grasso.

In addition to her work as a director, Christine is also an acting coach in private practice. She has completed one screenplay and is currently working on a second. She is a member of SAG-AFTRA, AEA, and SDC (the Society of Stage Directors & Choreographers).
