Bruno Nicolini, professionally known as Bénabar, is a French songwriter and singer, born on June 16, 1969. He is often compared to fellow French singers Vincent Delerm and others of his generation, who were all influenced by renowned artists such as Georges Brassens, Renaud, Jacques Higelin, and Tom Waits.
Bénabar's songs are known for their witty humor and tender cynicism, describing everyday life events in a relatable manner. His music is deeply rooted in French chanson, with a strong emphasis on piano, accordion, and traditional French fanfare, which sets him apart from other artists.
Before pursuing a music career, Bénabar began working in the film industry, serving as an assistant on the 1991 film Le Brasier and later directing three short subjects: Nada Lezard (1991),José Jeannette (1992),and Sursum corda (1994).
He then transitioned to music, collaborating with his friend Patchol, who gave him his stage name. Bénabar went on to perform in small venues across France, Belgium, and Switzerland before the release of his debut album, Bénabar (2001),which earned him recognition and the opportunity to open for Henri Salvador.
The album Les risques du métier (2004) was a commercial success, earning him the award for "album chanson/variété" of the year. His subsequent album, Reprise des négociations, sold even better, with over 2.18 million euros in sales in 2006. Bénabar won the awards for "Male group or artist of the year" and "original song of the year" for his work on the album.
Bénabar has two brothers, Patrick and Sébastien, and two children, Manolo (born 2004) and a daughter born in 2009. He has been a member of the Les Enfoirés charity ensemble since 2007.
