Biography

Arvo Iho, born on June 21, 1949, is a multifaceted creative professional, hailing from Rakvere, Estonia. Prior to embarking on a career in film, Iho honed his skills as a photographer and assistant at Tallinnfilm, a prominent film production company.

Iho's cinematic journey took a significant turn when he enrolled at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography, where he studied cinematography. His impressive resume boasts an association with the esteemed filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky, serving as assistant director on the 1979 film Stalker.

The 1980s saw Iho work as a cameraman for Tallinnfilm, a period that laid the groundwork for his subsequent directorial endeavors. In 1985, Iho co-directed the feature film Games for School–Age Children alongside Leida Laius, taking on the additional role of director of cinematography. Two years later, he made his solo directorial debut with The Birdwatcher, a thought-provoking exploration of the complex relationship between a poacher and an ornithologist.

Iho's impressive body of work continued to grow with the release of Only for the Insane in 1990. The early 2000s saw the director tackle the novel-based film The Heart of the Bear, followed by the 2006 release Gooseberries.

Beyond his work in film, Iho has also established himself as a talented photographer, with his exhibitions garnering international recognition. As of 2017, Iho held the esteemed position of professor at Tallinn University's Baltic Film and Media School, where he continues to share his expertise with the next generation of filmmakers.
