Throughout his illustrious career, Mayo directed a wide range of films, from the 1929 comedy Is Everybody Happy? to the 1932 drama Night After Night, and from the 1930 crime thriller The Doorway to Hell to the 1933 drama Convention City. He also worked on the 1933 drama The Mayor of Hell, the 1936 drama The Petrified Forest, and the 1938 adventure film The Adventures of Marco Polo.
After retiring in 1946, Mayo capped off his career with two notable films: A Night in Casablanca, starring the Marx Brothers, and Angel on My Shoulder, featuring Paul Muni, Anne Baxter, and Claude Rains.
