Amy Carlson, also known as Mother God, was a 45-year-old American cult leader and co-founder of the new religious movement Love Has Won. Born on November 30, 1975, she claimed to be God, a 19 billion years old being, and a reincarnation of Jesus Christ. Her followers believed she possessed the power to heal people of cancer with the power of love.
Amy's early adult life was marked by increasingly outlandish concepts, including starships. She developed an interest in New Age philosophy and became a regular poster on the forums of Lightworkers.org. In 2007, she left her third husband, her three children, and her job as a manager at McDonald's. She cut off contact with most family members and moved to Colorado.
Love Has Won, initially known as the Galactic Federation of Light, posted its first YouTube videos in 2009. The movement grew mainly through the internet from 2014 onwards. The group traveled between Colorado, Oregon, California, and Florida before settling in Moffat, Colorado.
By September 2020, Amy was in poor health, paralyzed from the waist down, and reportedly had cancer. In early April 2021, the group was forced to leave an RV park in Mount Shasta, California, due to overcrowding. Amy was last seen alive by someone outside the group on April 10, 2021.
On April 28, 2021, Amy's mummified corpse was discovered in a makeshift shrine in the mission house near Crestone, Colorado. The body was wrapped in a sleeping bag with Christmas lights, the face covered in glitter, and the eyes missing. Authorities estimated she had been dead for several weeks.
Following Amy's death, the group splintered, with the most recent "Father God" Jason Castillo forming the separate group Joy Rains with a small number of followers.
