Adrienne Ruth McClure, known professionally as Adrienne Ames, was a talented American film actress born on August 3, 1907, in Fort Worth, Texas. She began her film career in 1927, initially serving as a stand-in for the renowned Polish actress Pola Negri. As the film industry transitioned from silent films to talking pictures, Ames' popularity grew, and she was frequently cast as society women or in musicals. Throughout the 1930s, she appeared in thirty films, with her greatest success coming in George White's Scandals (1934),a notable film that marked the debut of Alice Faye.
Ames also shared the screen with the three leading men from the 1931 version of Dracula, including Bela Lugosi, David Manners, and Edward Van Sloan, in the 1932 film The Death Kiss. However, by the end of the decade, her popularity began to wane, and she eventually left Hollywood for New York, feeling discouraged.
In 1941, Ames made a successful transition to radio, hosting a popular talk show on station WHN in New York City. Her program was a regular feature until just before her untimely death in 1947. Throughout her life, Ames was married three times, including to actor Bruce Cabot from 1933 to 1937.
Sadly, Ames passed away on May 31, 1947, due to cancer complications in New York City. She is laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery, her hometown of Fort Worth, Texas. In recognition of her significant contributions to the motion picture industry, Adrienne Ames has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located at 1612 Vine Street.
