Two women, a repeat offender and a first-time offender who unintentionally killed a child, are sent to a maximum security state prison in the 1950s. The repeat offender feels at home among the inmates and guards, while the other woman is terrified and struggling with her mental state. The prison is run by a heartless and brutal director, and the guards are severe and unfriendly. The only ray of hope is the prison doctor, who tries to protect his patients despite having little power. The two new arrivals must navigate the harsh environment and learn to survive.
