Karel Kopfrkingl, a Czech crematorium worker in the late 1930s, finds joy in his job and believes that cremation brings relief from earthly suffering. He is introduced to Reineke, a former World War I comrade, at a reception. Reineke encourages Kopfrkingl to emphasize his German roots, including enrolling his shy son in a German school.
