The African Queen background

The African Queen

A Canadian riverboat captain is recruited by a missionary to navigate a perilous African river and utilize his vessel to launch a surprise attack on a German warship during World War I.

In September 1914, the outbreak of war in Europe makes Reverend Samuel Sayer, a British missionary, a hostile foreigner in German East Africa. After his mission is burned down and he dies of fever, his sister Rose Sayer sets out on a perilous journey with grumpy steamboat captain Charlie Allnut to avenge her brother and do their part for the British war effort. They plan to build a torpedo and use their steamboat, the African Queen, to take out a German warship, the Louisa, on a treacherous lake.
