Philip asks her to mentor a commoner, Antonio Perez, for the role of First Secretary. Ana and Antonio's romance sparks a scandal in court, where intrigue is constant. Philip arrests Antonio for murder, and when Ana refuses to leave Madrid, she too is arrested. After imprisonment, Ana is transferred to her home, where she's held captive. Antonio escapes and reunites with Ana, who convinces him to flee the country with her son.
