In 19th-century Indiana, John Wickliff Shawnessy, a high-achieving writer, graduates from high school and is torn between his sweetheart Nell and a southern belle, Susanna Drake, who has recently arrived in town. Despite marrying Susanna out of circumstance, John's relationships with both women are fraught with tension, mirroring the differences between the north and south, and are further complicated by secrets surrounding Susanna's family history and the impending American Civil War.
