George Eastman, a son of poor missionaries, is caught between two worlds after his father's death. He meets his wealthy uncle in Chicago and is offered a job at one of his factories. Despite being neglected by the Eastmans, George sees this as a stepping stone to a better life and works hard to achieve it. He starts dating fellow employee Alice Tripp, but is later befriended by society temptress Angela Vickers, whom he falls in love with. However, he is torn between his desire for prosperity and his love for Angela, and his obligation to Alice, who is pregnant with his child.
