Ethel Saxon is on trial for murdering her husband, claiming it was an accidental "crime of passion". Despite her admission, the jury foreman Edward Weldon influences the verdict, leading to a death sentence. On the night of Ethel's execution, a reporter, Bob Nolan, witnesses Edward's reaction and later photographs him and his family when a shot rings out.
