Kwaidan

Japanese folk tales with supernatural themes are woven together in this captivating film.

The film consists of four separate stories. The first, "Black Hair", follows a poor samurai who divorces his true love to marry for wealth, only to return to his old wife and discover a dark secret. In "The Woman in the Snow", a woodcutter is stranded in a snowstorm and encounters a mysterious woman who spares his life, but with a condition he later forgets. "Hoichi the Earless" tells the tale of a blind musician who is summoned by ghostly imperial courtiers to perform an epic ballad, but at a terrible cost to his life. Finally, "In a Cup of Tea" revolves around a writer who recounts the story of a man who keeps seeing a strange face reflected in his tea cup.
