Haruko Sugimura was a renowned Japanese stage and film actress, whose illustrious career spanned over five decades, from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. She is particularly notable for her numerous appearances in the cinematic works of two prominent Japanese filmmakers, Yasujiro Ozu and Mikio Naruse.
Her most iconic role, which gained her international recognition, was that of Shige, the hairdresser daughter of an elderly couple, in Ozu's critically acclaimed film, Tokyo Story, released in 1953.
