In the 19th century, a shipwreck leaves a man and woman stranded in the African wilderness. After giving birth, the woman dies, and the father is killed by an ape. A female ape finds the newborn boy and raises him as her own, replacing her dead infant. Twenty years later, Captain D'Arnot discovers the boy, now a feral man, and sets out to return him to society, uncovering his aristocratic heritage in the process.
