Mike and Janet Harper, an American couple, move to England for Mike's work in wool textiles. They rent a house in Kent, but Mike often stays in company flats in town, making Janet feel neglected. Janet suspects Mike of having an affair with his secretary, Claire, fueled by their busybody landlady and the arrival of French decorator Paul, who is hired to decorate their house. As Claire and Paul are thrown into compromising positions, their relationships with Mike and Janet could potentially break up their marriage.
