Luigi and Lafayette, two immigrants, work at Andreas Flaxman's wax museum in Lower Manhattan. Luigi is an artist/sculptor, while Lafayette is a jack-of-all-trades with a passion for Ancient Rome. He also works at a feminist theater group, where he faces sexist abuse. Meanwhile, Luigi finds a 50-foot King Kong model in a landfill and adopts a baby chimpanzee, which he believes is the giant ape's son.
