Human civilization no longer relies solely on fire for energy; instead, it is now heavily influenced by fear of it. Wars have significantly altered human biology, causing spontaneous combustion when exposed to natural flames. However, a new source of renewable energy has prevented society from complete collapse: a stone material that generates light and steam exists within the bodies of forest-dwelling monsters. Fire hunters are responsible for gathering this valuable resource. Touko, a young village girl, is saved by a fire hunter who sacrifices himself during his heroic mission to protect her. The surviving dog, Kanata, heals from its injuries before the girl's family sends her to the capital to retrieve Kanata and her late father's fire sickle for him. Elsewhere, Koushi, the fire hunter’s son, is adopted by a wealthy family, where he learns troubling facts about his country’s ruling royal family. He embarks on secret research into a special fire stone discovered by his late father, setting off a race against time between those trying to save mankind and the leaders of the country in preventing its ultimate demise. The story combines themes of fear, sacrifice, heroism, and scientific discovery within the context of ancient folklore and modern societal challenges.
