In 2199, Earth is invaded by alien invaders called the Gamilas. They hail from a dying planet and decide to make Earth their new home. The Gamilas rain radioactive bombs on Earth, turning it into an uninhabitable wasteland (but hospitable for them). Despite being outclassed by the Gamilas, hope remains when a mysterious space probe is retrieved on Mars. This probe contains blueprints for a device that can cleanse Earth's radiation damage. Queen Starsha of Iscandar claims to have this device and advises Earth to build a super battleship called Yamato, capable of traveling to Iscandar (in another galaxy) in one year. With 999 brave crew members on board, they set out for Iscandar with the hope of obtaining the device. However, their journey is threatened by the Gamilas' presence and time may run out before they can reach their destination.
