In a post-apocalyptic 2199, the remnants of humanity live underground after Gamilas' radiation bombs ravaged the Earth. Former pilot Susumu Kodai finds a message about a device to remove radiation from the planet's surface, sent from Iskandar. The UN Space Administration rebuilds the Yamato with a Wave Motion Engine, allowing it to journey to Iskandar and back to save the Earth before it's too late.
