Post-war Japan. Fusako Owada's life is turned upside down when her husband and ill baby both pass away. She finds solace in a new job as a secretary for opium dealer Kenzô Kuriyama, and her neighbor Kumiko becomes a close friend. But when Fusako's estranged sister Natsuko returns from Korea, her life becomes increasingly complicated. Natsuko begins working as a dancer in a night club, and soon finds herself embroiled in a romantic affair with Fusako's boss. Meanwhile, Fusako is secretly Kuriyama's mistress, and her jealousy and anger boil over. As tensions rise, Natsuko becomes pregnant and sets out to find her missing sister in the city's red-light district. Will she be able to track down Fusako and bring her back into the fold?
