In the early 20th century, a cheerful rickshaw driver named Matsugoro "Matsu" is a well-known figure in his village. After rescuing an injured boy, Toshio, Matsu befriends the boy's family, the Yoshiokas. When Captain Kotaro Yoshioka suddenly passes away, Matsu helps Yoshiko raise her son, and eventually develops romantic feelings for her. However, he hesitates to express his love due to their differing social classes.
