An elderly foundry owner, Kiichi Nakajima, is consumed by the fear of nuclear annihilation, causing his family to seek a court ruling to declare him incompetent. Despite his family's concerns, Nakajima's fervent desire is to escape Japan with them and seek safety in South America, a wish that a sympathetic civil volunteer, Harada, shares.
