In 1830, on the island of Calvados, Manuela Alva dreams of falling in love with the legendary pirate Macoco. However, her guardians insist she marry the town mayor, Don Pedro, an arrogant older man. Before the wedding, Manuela meets a troupe of circus actors, led by the handsome Serafin, who learns she secretly loves Macoco. He pretends to be Macoco to woo her, but his ruse convinces everyone, including Manuela, and he's arrested as a pirate. Despite his protests, he's sentenced to death, but Manuela and Serafin arrange a miraculous escape.
