In 1920s Paris, an American artist named Nick Hart navigates the expatriate community, frequenting cafes and trying to sell his artwork to gallery owner Libby Valentin. However, his life takes a dramatic turn when he becomes entangled in a scheme to forge three paintings for wealthy patroness Nathalie de Ville, which puts him at odds with American businessman Bertram Stone, who is married to Hart's ex-wife Rachel.
