Reverend Cotton Marcus, a devout evangelical preacher, agrees to be filmed for a documentary about his life. He shares his struggles with faith, revealing that he prioritized medical help over prayer when his wife had a difficult delivery. Cotton also confesses that he believes exorcisms are fraudulent, but the illusion of a successful ritual brings comfort to believers. When he's asked to perform an exorcism on a troubled girl named Nell, Cotton sees an opportunity to demonstrate his skepticism to the documentary crew. They travel to Ivanwood, where they're met with hostility by Nell's family, particularly her troubled brother Caleb. As Cotton conducts the ritual, he exposes his tricks to the camera, but soon discovers that the Sweetzer family's problems run far deeper than any supernatural issues.
