In Argentina, Julio Madariaga, a family man, considers his farm paradise. His daughters, including the beautiful Chi Chi, marry foreign men and have children. When his grandson Heinrich joins the S.S., Julio has a heart attack and dies. The family reunites in Paris, where the grandson is a Nazi administrator. The alienated Julio, a painter, has an affair with a married woman and uses his connection to the Germans to aid the French resistance after his daughter is arrested and tortured to death.
