Summer 1910. The beautiful beaches of the Channel Coast are plagued by mysterious disappearances. Inspectors Machin and Malfoy investigate and discover the epicenter is Slack Bay, where the Slack river meets the sea at high tide. A small community of fishermen and oyster farmers live there, including the Bréfort family, led by the father known as "The Eternal". His sons, including 18-year-old Ma Loute, are a prankster bunch. The Van Peteghems, a degenerate and decadent family, live in a mansion overlooking the bay. As a love story develops between Ma Loute and Billie Van Peteghem, both families are shaken to their core.

In the early 20th century, at the Pas de Calais, a romance blossoms between Ma Loute, a young fisherman, and Billie, the daughter of a wealthy family, amidst a mysterious series of disappearances.
