In 1915 Stockholm, three women - Agda, Adele, and Angela - prepare to give birth in a clinic, each reflecting on the circumstances that led them to this moment. Agda, a housemaid, is pregnant with a child from a relationship with a young middle-class man and is now married to a gay artist. Adele, married to a farmer, struggles with frigidity and is expecting a child resulting from a rape by her husband. Meanwhile, Angela, from an aristocratic background, is giving birth to an illegitimate child after a relationship with a 50-year-old man.
