In 1909, Mary Archer, daughter of small-town aristocrats, waits for the return of her former flame Jeff from Germany. When Jeff arrives, he brings along his German friend Hugo Wilbrandt, who falls in love with and marries Mary. The couple settles into a life of prosperity as Hugo joins the faculty of a small college.
