In 1860 Edinburgh, a sheep herder named Jock Gray finds a stray Collie puppy, which he names Lassie and raises as his own. After Jock's death, Lassie becomes devoted to his grave, sleeping in the churchyard to be close to him. Despite efforts to find her a new home, Lassie persistently escapes and returns to Jock's grave, leading to a confrontation with a local magistrate who orders her destruction for lacking a license.
