The biographical drama follows the remarkable life of Gus Edwards, a renowned vaudeville composer, performer, and producer.

A penniless songwriter convinces an orphanage assistant to marry him, but they struggle financially as his songs fail to sell. He discovers a group of newsboys with talent and decides to form a kid act for vaudeville. The act becomes a hit, and he launches a talent train to find new performers. He discovers a 14-year-old girl with a remarkable voice and builds a musical revue around her. However, the show is shut down by the Gerry Society, which enforces a law against children working late at night, leaving Larry's future uncertain.
