The film tells the story of Ingmar Bergman's parents, exploring their tumultuous relationship. Henrik, a poor and idealistic theology student, falls in love with Anna, the intelligent and educated daughter of a wealthy family in Uppsala. After their marriage, Henrik becomes a priest in rural Sweden, but Anna grows increasingly unhappy with their isolated life among uncouth people and eventually returns to her family in Uppsala, leaving Henrik behind.
